A deck a day pt. 2: MBC with a splash

While Sturmgott is busy at work, I want to give you a new list. This time it is an oldy which might be interesting if you suspect an aggro-meta. MBC always performed well against aggro and with adding green you have more flexibility against the typical threats for MBC.

So, no long talking, here’s the list:

So let us know what you think. cya Malz77

im missing sorin markov tbh. IMO planeswalker with the right color combination should be autoincludes all the time! the 2nd thing i am wondering about is the high land count but not playing expedition map for example. gatekeeper of malakir should be better than nekrataal in most cases as well. and i think i would add mana accs like mox diamond and chrome mox, those two perform very well against aggro.

im crafting around a similar deck for some time splashing blue as well for cards like intuition gifts and stuff. it will lose some power against aggro but can maintain its level against other control decks more easily.

I have even tried a rainbow black variant, that is focused on (ab)using Cabal Coffers, which is why almost every land in the deck is a Swamp:

The list is somewhat older and still has illegal stuff in it like Enlightened Tutor. The deck is very strong in an environment where Mass LD is rare – but against Stax or decks that otherwise regularly destroy all lands, the deck doesn’t stand a chance.

When you already splash green for borderline cards like Naturalize and Krosan Grip, isn’t Tarmogoyf an option?

    • Sturmgott Sturmgott says:

The splash is being used for exactly those tasks which a pure MBC build cannot easily solve. I don’t see much sense in adding a green creature – black has enough quality critters and doesn’t need Tarmogoyf.

If the opponent is playing any “non-black” removal like Terror or Doom Blade, Tarmogoyf would simply fall prey very easily, too. That just adds to it.

A better idea would be to add Volrath’s Stronghold to the collection of powerful nonbasic lands. In this case I’d advocate playing Nantuko Vigilante over Naturalize.

@ marcmagic: you are right, expedition map should be included. i don’t have any experience with sorin markov, maybe I should give him a chance, but I’m not convinced yet. gatekeeper should be included too. chrome mox will defintely not be included. meanwhile i cutted chrome mox from all my decks (except combo) because in most the loss of a handcard hurts more than the case of speed advantage is needed. mox diamond is therfore an earlier land…

  4. coldcrow coldcrow says:

sorin Markov is a powerhouse. Not only does he provide life for abusing necro and abrgain, he is also a veritable threat. I am also missing Necro and Bargain in your list. Drana should also be included imho, heck if you run Magus, you can also think of the revenant. Diabolic tutor seems awfully slow, soul Burn not efficient enough. I even cut Mind shatter from my lists because it was always late. Wrench Mind is not good, better run distress or Thoughtseize. Inq. of Kozilek seems good too. consuming Vapors is tailormade for MBC.

  5. malz77 malz77 says:

i had necro and bargain in the deck and cutted them both. i think the meta ist to fast to just “play” (combo is something different) those cards. mostly your are dead after drawing a bunch of cards…

distress, thoughtseize and iok do not provide card advantage so i don’t wanna play them in mbc. duress has from my point of view several advantges towards the three named cards and is therfore included.

in a deck that generates so much mana it isn’t important that the tutor costs 4. mostly it’s a second demonic

both, drana and revenant look good. will be an add. also cons. vapors seems to be a candidate

  6. PuTe PuTe says:

a short question..are u convinced about Darbklast? i know its cool since its reusable but is -1/-1 enough?- exspecially as a later drawn card.?..
However i totally agree with sturmgott in adding volraths stronghold as a rly powerfull nonbasic.(and the vigilant seems to be a good choice for your mbc with the quite tiny g-splash) + add expedition map!^^
    best regards

ah! and also think about shadow of doubt..love this card and it performs VERY well
