Gw-Elves

Today I want to present a deck which is  loved and hated all over the world . My friend Patrik (also known as Pennywise on the forums) played this deck since 12 years and is constantly improving it. He also got the 4th place on the Highlander Grand Prix three years ago. He tried different builds with a black and white splash or just green.

This  build is mono green with a slighty white splash for Ravages of War and Armageddon since its obvious that a deck which got so many alternative mana sources can only benefit from such mighty spells. Additionally there are Mirror Entity and Ranger of Eos

Here is the list:

As you can see a lot of the cards are meant to be synergetic which is not unusual for a tribal deck like this. Since elves are one of the oldest tribes in magic there are a LOT of options to put in. I saw many many builds over the years. Straight aggro, aggro-control and even combo elves (yeah nothing spectacular in extended). Patrik tried also some combo elements like staff of domination or Progenitus. But he came to the conclusion that straight aggro with a very aggressive curve is the best way to go.

It would be very easy to implement some black cards since the deck is capable to splash any kind of colour for cards like Maelstrom Pulse or Putrefy and Demonic Tutor. As far as I know Patrik was not satisfied with these cards so he was going back to a more creatures less non creature spells – build. To implement the mass land destruction is in my view a very good call to the actual meta game.

A lot of 4-5c aggro decks are going wild and have such strong cards from all colours. He´s able to finish the game with just one spell against these decks. And even against control its a game winning card. Since its not my deck I cant write as much as you guys would like but I´ve seen it a  lot in real life and think its one of the best tribal decks out there if not the best.

Its a force to reckon with. I lost on the last Grand Prix my only game in swiss against Gwb Elves and its insane what potential they have. I cant imagine any other deck which can get such explosives starts like elves. I hope you guys enjoy this list and feel free to ask.

so far~

What do you think about Sword of Body and Mind? Did you try it? Do you think it could be better than Sword of Light and Shadow?

  2. helle helle says:

Also what about Talara’s Battalion, wouldn’t it fit the aggro theme better than Wood Elves?

  3. Pennywise Pennywise says:

I didn’t try Sword of Body and Mind, ’cause i didn’t know what to cut…
Also I’m not sure, if its good enough, because all it does is creating a 2/2 Wolf, if it connects to the opp, the mill-part could be ingored in highlander.

I played Talara’s Battalion for a while, but soon I recognized its only good if you could play it in the first few turns, otherwise it isn’t that impressive.
But to play it in the second turn you must have a hand containing a one-mana-mana-elf, another random one-drop and the Battalion, and that happend not that often.

  4. b. b. says:

I’ve seen that deck and rebuilded my mono G Elf-Highlander ;)
I’ll post my changes in a few Days…

But i’m playing Sword of Body and Mind and Talara’s Batallion in there…
Sword: Protection from 2 Colours, if not blocked, additional Wolf token (chumpblocker or synergetics beween other cards like Master of the Wild Hunt) additionally u get the mill for 10 (ok, most of the times it doesn’t matter, but sometimes^^) and don’t forget: ur creature get +2/+2 …
Batallion: The biggest benefit of them is, to play them turn 2, but i don’t think they’re bad in latergame. 4/3 Body with all of the Lords isn’t that bad i think. The key ability for me to play them is Trample…

  5. Pennywise Pennywise says:

Protection is always good, but in my oppinion green and blue aren’t the colors you have to fear most.
Sword of Light and Shadow grants protection from a lot of removal and helps to recover after mass removal.
Sword of Fire and Ice is cardadvantage and removal at its best.
I think you do not need to play more than two swords, but give it a try and tell us what your experiences where.

Talaras Batallion is too easy killed by all nearly burn spells played in highlander and is sometimes a bit hard to cast, but try it ;)

What do you think about Progenitus+Natural Order?
I played it but it was either in my hand and nearly unplayable, or stolen by the opponent (Bribery) and killed me.

What about other combo elements like Staff of Domination, or Intruder Alarm?
I kicked all the combos, except for Mirror Entity+Wirewood Symbiote, ’cause this cards are good enough on their own.

  6. helle helle says:

I didn’t like Progenitus, because you cannot hardcast it. If you do so, you probably should add Tooth and Nail as another way to cheat the creature into play.

Instead I play Terastodon, destroying up to three permanents is a huge swing most of the time. Even though I’m unsure if Woodfall Primus is better?

Also I would like to know your experiences with Ambush Commander: Is the card strong enough to risk getting destroyed entirly?

  7. Pennywise Pennywise says:

The trick with Ambush Commander is simply: keep two mana open, if you play him, so you can sacrifice himself to its ability ;)
But he is always like a win, even on an nearly empty board, or you could sac the blocked creatures, making the unblocked lethal.

  8. b. b. says:

Thought about Loxodon Warhammer, Behemoth Sledge, Harmonize and Overwhelming Stampede. Equipments for the Trample ability, but cuttet to have an higher creature count.Maybe i’m gonna test them. Harmonize and Stampede are both good cards, but i don’t wanna cut creatures for that ;) . I played Ascetism, Lurking Predators, Primordial Sage and Regal Force in my mono G HL but in this built they’re to chunky.

    Lands:

Volrath’s Stronghold – Provides many options and the B isn’t so hard to get
Overgrown Tomb + Bayou – Fetchable and provides B.
Wooded Bastion – for W fixing
Treetop Village – What shall i say ;)
Oran Rief – Performs best with masses of tokens…

    Equipments

Sword of Body and Mind – Ok, its not the best Equip in there, but it has its right to exist. In a Mirrormatch, its the Matchwinner. Even as Topdeck it enhances 1/1 Mana elves when equipped.

Sword of Vengeance – +2/+0, Haste, First Strike, Trample, Vigilance i think this Sword hast the ability to change a stalled board… The weakest ability is haste, but in the right moment all of them could make the change to your boardposition.

    Creatures

Stoneforge Mystic – There are really good Equipments in the Deck. But no way to search them. Against an Mono B opponent you need Sword of Light and Shadow, none of the others. That’s why i implemented this little guy. In weird Scenarios, you can use his cip effect oftener (Mystic/Entity/Symbiote). Normally, its enough when he finds 1 good Equipment ;) Every Llanowar topdeck in lategame is better with such an equipment outside (u cannot hope to have a Fauna Shaman active)

Elvish Harbinger // Wood Elves – Same CC, but I think you better Topdeck an Elvish Harbinger instead of Wood Elves. Most of all you don’t need the land (sure.. less lands in Deck). Think Harbinger is with his cip effect better and provide a mana of any colour… Furthermore the cip effect harmonizes with Wirewood Symbiote.

Nullmage Sheperd // Viridian Shaman – Sure, u must have 4 creature’s but Virirdian Shaman only destroys Artifacts… In most Matchups, there wasn’t an artifact that kicked me in the ass, it was an Enchantment like Moat, Duelling Grounds, Collective Restraint, Propaganda, Ghostly Prison…. Therefore i’m willing to risk that ;)

Talara’s Batallion – The “Trample” Ability is for me the key, a 1/1 Llanowar isn’t that good too, but he’s growing through Elvish Champion etc. therefore a 4/3 body with trample is in my eyes better ;)
Stoneforge Mystic – 4 Equipments, that are REALLY good, but no way to search them… therefore, this little guy implemented ;)

    Cutted Cards:

Hunting Triad – It’s a good card (even if i Would prefer Elvish Promenade^^) but its gone for Sword of Body and Mind.

Oblivion Ring – ok, removal, but creatures shoulded be handled a) with cards like Master of the Wild Hunt or b) in creature masses, so that your opp won’t attack. For Artifacts/Enchantments you have Zealot and Sheperd. You don’t really need the ring.

Krosan Grip – Same as Ring

Chord of Calling – That decision was hard. But i had to cut a card and i don’t want to cut creatures. So Chord had to go.

It performs really well so far ;)

I don’t like Progenitus//Natural Order builds in a weenie/aggro HL. You can’t hardcast it and you don’t have many cards to put it back in deck if you have it on hand. That’s funny in casual, but almost dead cards in a tournament.

Staff and Intruder Alarm are both for casual gaming. It will take too long… You will win with Quantity not with Quality ;)

  9. Pennywise Pennywise says:

    Overwhelming Stampede
–> I cut it for Ezuri

Volrath’s Stronghold, Wooded Bastion, Treetop Village, Oran Rief
–> their all non-forests wich is ugly for Rofellos and Quirion Ranger, also I kicked black out completly thats why Overgrown Tomb + Bayou aren’t in.
Treetop Village and Oran Rief etb tapped, which is a heavy drawback, but i think Oran Rief should be amazing (I hav to try it ;) )

    Stoneforge Mystic
–>Even if it’s not an elf, it should go in there, ’cause it’s a good tutor, but what to cut?

    Elvish Harbinger//Wood Elves
–> Maybe you’r right, but the ramp of Wood Elves can’t be killed, otherwise it is the worse topdeck in the lategame

    Nullmage Sheperd//Viridian Shaman
–>for enchantments i have the Zealot/Oblivion Ring/Krosan Grip, i think the Sheperd is too slow and do you realy want to have four creatures on the field which can not attack?

    Hunting Triad
–> it is much better than Promenade, caus it creates the token even on an empty board (i think Promenade is a “win more” card) and its also a very nice combat-trick

    Oblivion Ring
–> removes everything (yes enchantments too) and could handle those pesky planeswalker

    Krosan Grip
–> in this slot i played Naturalize, but Krosan grip is much better, even if its more expensive

    Chord of Calling
–> WOW, how could you cut this??? It helps to assemble combo, finds solution and could be played without having mana open

I fully agree with your explanation about Staff/Progenitus/Intruder Alarm.

  10. b. b. says:

Volrath’s Stronghold, Wooded Bastion, Treetop Village, Oran Rief

I think the benefits of this lands weigh more then the problem with synergys. Wooded Bastion could be cuttet. But i would play Treetop Village over Misrha’s Factory, provides G.

Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree is even thinkable. Or Ajani Goldmane…

    Elvish Harbinger//Wood Elves

Sure, the ramp of Wood Elves can’t be destroyed, but i think Harbinger is a better topdeck then Wood Elves. With Harbing u can search a solution…

    Stoneforge Mystic // Hunting Triad

    +creature count +cardadvantage +synergetics +solutionfinding

    Nullmage Sheperd//Viridian Shaman

Following: Moat//Duelling Grounds enters opponents board. You have Viridian Shaman Topdeck -> Dead Card. Topdeck Nullmage Sheperd: Solution. Having 3 untapped creatures to destroy enchantment. But if Moat is lying there, you soon will have 4 to tap, cause you cannot attack ;) And this is a risk i’m willing to play. With Stronghold you have maybe the additional option to search Zealot and “reanimate” him. So your able to cut O-Ring and Krosan Grip.

Against Planeswalker, you should be able to run them with your creatures. Furthermore, the Swords should help. Sometimes you haven’t to attack the PW, with most wheenies, your opp is faster dead, then the pw can explode (opp at 14 Life, plays ajani vengeant, you can attack for 10… y kill the pw? Oo)

Chord of Calling: Sure, it is a good card. But first of all, you cannot play it without open mana. You need GGG so you need at least a Manacreature. Then you can run convoke. But therefore you need untapped creatures. And that was your argument against the sheperd ;) I don’t really see any Combo (sry my oppinion of a combo is, when i start it, my opponent is dead like Earthcraft/Squirrelnest) the only thing i see: Synergetics and in a tribal HL they HAVE to be synergetics. You don’t really need Chord therefore, u can enable it with some other cards too (like Ranger of Eos or Elvish Harbinger)

    • Pennywise Pennywise says:

You could play Chord without mana open, cause green creatures will pay the GGG.
And the combo is Mirror Entity + Wirewood Symbiote + any way to create more than two mana.

  11. Fenry Fenry says:

I wouldn’t play equipments in this deck because in my opionen elves try to win with one attack after an overrun effect or something like that. Maybe I am wrong but elves can do much more powerfull stuff rather than spend there mana to equip an 1/1 creature…

If you play equipments, I would add Stoneforge Mystic. Sure it is no elf but with good equipments this guy is awesome on its own.

Also some cards I would consider playing…

Chord of Calling: Never ever cut this card. You can search end of turn for a Mirror Entity or against artifact/enchantments for Viridian Zealot or … or… In addition you can play it in response to a wrath to search Ranger of Eos or Dountless Escourt. The last one is also a card I would play to protect the important elves.

Regal Force: If you want to play a big creature, I would suggest this one. It fills your hand in the lategame and 5/5 is a serious threat.

Thornscape Battlemage: Another creature that can destroy artifacts. In advance to Viridian Shaman you don’t have to destroy a artifact If you cast him. Sometimes you can even kicker his red ability with mana from rangers for example.

Wordly Tutor/ Eladamri’s Call: In my experience this deck really needs the right creature in the right situation… therefore I would play those tutors.

Sensei Divining Top: This card is good in nearly every deck!

Sylvan Library: It helps to draw the right cards.

  12. cedzoh cedzoh says:

is rhys good enough in an elf deck? why?

  13. John Boy Balton John Boy Balton says:

yes he is good… because of its 2nd ability…

  14. Pennywise Pennywise says:

and because of its first ability (Eldrazi Monument) and its green/white (Liege;) ) and its a onedrop…

  15. Pennywise Pennywise says:

today i tested some of the mentioned cards (+Elvish Harbinger/-Wood Elves;+Stoneforge Mystic/-Genesis Wave) and it seemed to be a good choice.

  16. b. b. says:

The whole construct of this HL is clear and good. Only some card choices could be tested… In the moment i additionally added some first drops
Elvish Hexhunter – Destoys Enchantment ++++
Defiant Elf – First Round Drop, have Trample (can’t help, love Elfs with Trample^^)
Elvish Lookout – Shroud… But i’m not sure yet
Llanowar Elite – 1 Round Drop with Trample and in midgame no bad topdeck, cause of the kicker costs
Taunting Elf – Helps you bringing the lethal dmg trough, but im not sure if you rly need him^^
Treetop Scout – can only be blocked by flying creatures – sounds good ;)
Twinblade Slasher – First turner, wither and pumbable…

When i finished, I’ll gonna post the changes.

I’m gonna cut Plow Under. Which lands are bad against me? Maze of Ith, Kor Haven, Wasteland, Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Rishadan Port…. I don’t think that maze and haven are so annoying… it will take 1 round longer maybe… Rishadan Port… Not really
Ok, unanswered Tabernacle is a problem. But in most cases, you have Gaea’s Cradle or some Manaelves… Wasteland, yeah, but Plow Under isn’t there a help ;) And you can’t search it.. Armageddon and Ravages can’t be searched too, but these are gamewinners. Plow Under not. This card could be nice to bring the opponent 2 rounds behind you. But in nearly all matches, i didn’t need Plow Under to have a 8 round “vorsprung” -sry neither I nor Leo know that English word for that^^

  17. Goblin Piledriver Goblin Piledriver says:

Like the Audi comercial says: “Vorsprung durch Technik”.
Translation for Vorsprung: advantage, advance, headstart, edge, projection, lug , jut.

  18. John Boy Balton John Boy Balton says:

    did anyone tested Elvish Guidance?

  19. Pennywise Pennywise says:

I played it in one of the very first versions of this deck, but it is not needed and too fragile.

  20. Elric Elric says:

    Hello,

im playing GW elves for quiet 2 years now and i have some suggestions.

    Lands:
    - Stirring Wildwood, we definetly want Colorfixing and every good manland we could get.
    - Mosswort Bridge: Cardadvantge, and the condition is not realy hard for us.

    Creatures:

    - i would like to see more protection creatures like Dauntless escort and/or Burrenton Forge-Tender. My version is more like an elfball one and yours more aggressivly, but i think those creatures are necessary against the massremovaldecks.

    - Scryb Ranger: Quirion Ranger #2, Combattrick, Blocker.

    Spells:

    - Eladamri’s Call, it IS the green Demonic here.

    - Primal Command: probably better than Plow Under (you’re playing 2 Armageddons)

    - Staff of Domination: Combopiece and otherwise a little bit clunky but will win some games.

After all i see some weird Choices here and i want to ask how following cards have done it for you or not (or what they have done especially).

    - Hunting Triad

    - Coat of Arms – i think nowadays it will bei simply outclassed by Garruk, Genesis wave, Monument and stuff.

    - Rancor

    - Ambush Commander, seems to my like overkill or suicide.

    - Wellwisher – not very Impressive when playing Warden and Command.

    - Jagged Scar Archers – kind of Conditionally

    - Rhys the Redeemed – isn’t Selesnya Guildmage just better?

    thats all for today ;)

    best Regards

    Elric

  21. Elric Elric says:

if you like to discuss the versions and my suggestions PM me on the german board.

  22. Pennywise Pennywise says:

    - Stirring Wildwood, we definetly want Colorfixing and every good manland we could get.
ETB tapped and isn’t a forest… Same reason why Treetop Village is missing.

    - Mosswort Bridge: Cardadvantge, and the condition is not realy hard for us.
ETB tapped and isn’t a forest… Waht do you expect to get in the top 4 cards? A 1/1 creature or very rarely a good card? I think the expected advantage isn’t worth the risk.

    - i would like to see more protection creatures like Dauntless escort and/or Burrenton Forge-Tender. My version is more like an elfball one and yours more aggressivly, but i think those creatures are necessary against the massremovaldecks.
Dauntless Escort is a creature I’m thinking about for a long time, what are your experiences?

    - Scryb Ranger: Quirion Ranger #2, Combattrick, Blocker.
But Scryb Ranger isn’t an elf…

    - Eladamri’s Call, it IS the green Demonic here.
Kicked it a while ago, I think it should get back in there.

    - Primal Command: probably better than Plow Under (you’re playing 2 Armageddons)
Maybe you’r right I have to test it.

    - Staff of Domination: Combopiece and otherwise a little bit clunky but will win some games.
Can’t win on it’s own, I played it for a long time but dodn’t like it.

    - Hunting Triad
Nice combat trick and creates three token, which is very nice after a wrath.

    - Coat of Arms
I think Coat of Arms is an additional Overrun effect it makes your creatures huge.

    - Rancor
Trample + Swords is so nice and if you have one big elf with rancor it sure will connect to your opponent and not get chumo-blocked.
Even the smallest elf is a thread with rancor.

    - Ambush Commander
If played right it is a matchwinner and could totaly turn around a board.

    - Wellwisher
But I always liked the possibility to get some more life and every opponent has to kill him or he would not win the game.

    - Jagged Scar Archers
Since they killed a Akroma, Angel of Wrath for me they are set in my Elf-Highlander ;)

    - Rhys the Redeemed
I’m not sure about this, ’cause Rhys creates elf token which are green and white and so will be bossted twice from Wilt-Leaf Liege.
And its second ability is completely broken with the many ways of creating wolf token, elf token and insect token in this highlander.

  23. b. b. says:

    - Ambush Commander
If played right it is a matchwinner and could totaly turn around a board.

But in most cases, its a dead card in hand… CUT !! ;)

  24. Elric Elric says:

that’s exactly what i thought about this card. Most times it is just a blank, a few times it will be outstanding good and some more games you will scoop to cards like pyroclasm or firespout, not only killing all of your guys, but all your lands too.

  25. Pennywise Pennywise says:

This are the latest changes for Elves:
    - Ambush Commander (can’t judge if its better or worse now…)
    - Wood Elves (are gone for Elvish Harbinger, because as mentioned they both fix mana, but the Harbinger is the better top deck)
    - plow under
    - genesis wave (too random)
    - armageddon (i think i can’t play this card at the right moment, have to improve my skills/experiences…)
    - ravages of war (see above)

+ Dauntless Escort (another way to survive mass removal)
+ Talaras Battalion (not sure if this is as good as it seems…)
+ Green Sun’s Zenith (Tutor for every single solution)
+ Eladamris Call (another Tutor for solution)
+ Elvish Harbinger (additional Tutor + white mana source)
+ Stoneforge Mystic (another Tutor for the right Euqipment in the given situtation)

All in all it changed a bit more to good stuff elements with more tutors.
Thaks for your ideas and mentioned improvements, keep going ;)

  26. muhti muhti says:

I play a somewhat similar list (although it isn’t my number one choice for competitive play at the moment) and I’d like to ask your opinions on some cards.

I’m currently testing cards like Tangle Wire (acting as Winter Orb 2) and Thorn of Amethyst (against combos), which have been so good in many MU’s that I’m thinking of adding stuff like Static Orb and Smokestack as well, just to increase the chance of drawing into some sort of soft lock or disruption to protect the board.

    And thanks for the post!

  27. Pennywise Pennywise says:

I think this could be worth a try…
It changes to some kind of prison with these additons, sounds interesting

  28. muhti muhti says:

I don’t know about a prison, but anything that delays the board sweeper for two turns is a potential game winner.

  29. Elessar Elessar says:

I was testing this deck too, with a few changes. I didn’t cut Wood Elves for the Harbinger to play both of them. I added Lead the Stampede, and I think that’s really a card you should think of. In a deck playing more than 50% creatures it draws 2~3 good cards (without flooding), and I was always happy to have it even in the opening hand.

I also play Wren’s Run Packmaster, but I really don’t remember having it on board. I don’t know if it was it’s bad furtune, or if it’s just not good in this deck…

  30. John Boy Balton John Boy Balton says:

    deckupdate?

    Now i´m playing:
    - Memory Jar
    - Phyrexian Metamorph
    - Birthing Pod

    did anybody test:
    - Beast Within
    - Fresh Meat

  31. Elessar Elessar says:

Did you make good experiences with your changes? I also would like to test these cards, but I’m not sure if the Birthing Pod is as good as it seems in an aggressive Deck. Isn’t it better to draw a creature instead of this? Maybe I’m wrong, I would like to hear your testing results.
I didn’t test Beast Within, but I think this is a really nice card for this deck. you can even use it by destroying one of your lands eot to get 3 more power on the board. Dresh Meat… looks nice on first sight, but its maybe too expensive and does nothing if there were no Wrath-effect. I would never cut cards like Caller of the Claw for this, because he’s got a 2/2 body on its own (with flash), and it has more synergies with other cards, because it produces Wolves and is an Elf-Creature. (Skyshroud Poacher, Lead the Stampede, Sylvan Messenger, Wirewood Herald, Primal Command, Wren’s Run Packmaster, Wirewood Symbiote, Green Sun’s Zenith, Chord of Calling, Master of the Wild Hunt, Eladamri’s Call, Elvish Harbinger, Fauna Shaman, and just every card that counts Elves or give them Bonuses.

imo: Memory Jar (should be worth a test), Phyrexian Metamorph (not shure if it’s good enough), Birthing Pod (funny card, but maybe a little bit too slow. But worth a test), Beast Within (I will definitely test it, this is just never a dead card!), Fresh Meat (too much Mana for a spell that just reacts to the opponent).

  32. John Boy Balton John Boy Balton says:

birthing pod is just god… :D

it has much synergies… for example:

1mana elves into herald into harbringer into messenger…. its pretty good card advantage…;)

and memory jar just wins games….

phyrexian metamoprph copies a biggie from your opponent, or kills a legend, or becomes a lord or a tangle wire or some like that.

  33. Elessar Elessar says:

I played my deck a few times yesterday, but I never drew the Pod or Jar… :(

  34. Elessar Elessar says:

I tested my Deck in a tournament and against a lot of different decks. My Changes compared with the first version of the Deck:

    Lands:
-Murmuring Bosk (would be good with black splash, but not in here imo)
-Mishra’s Factory (it’s not a forest, no green mana, this kind of lands often sucks in the beginning, if you want to play Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers, or multiple creatures. No synergy with Rofelos & co)
    +2 forests

    Creatures:
-Ambush Commander (maybe I just don’t like it, seems too often to be a dead card)
    -Viridian Shaman
-Essence Warden (one lifegaining Elf shall be enough, Wellwisher is way better)
-Wren’s Run Packmaster (It’s still not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Elf to tutor imo. It disturbs the tribe by removing one and creating wolves. I replaced him by faster creatures)
+Talara’s Battalion (Faster than the Packmaster, trample, most of my Experiences are very good)
+Elvish Harbinger (Tutor + Mana Fixing. I’m not sure if it’s better than Wood Elves, I play both of them. Wood Elves are much faster, and the manafixing is harder to remove.
    +Stoneforge Mystic (It’s just good… Sword #3)
+Dauntless Escort (It’s so relaxing having it on board. You can just fill the board with Elves – Wrath? Do it! – It becomes 5/5 with Wilt-Leaf Liege…)

    Spells:
-Plow Under (replaced by Primal Command, would like to play both, but don’t want to cut creatures)
-Genesis Wave (too random, replaced by Green Sun’s Zenith)
-Armageddon (This was a hard decision, I don’t know if it would be better to play it. Anyway, there are other very fast decks like Boros, rdw or ww, and I don’t want to draw it against those…)
-Ravages of War (like Armageddon, but I actually don’t have this card, and don’t wannt to buy it)
+Primal Command (better than Plow Under in most cases, second planeswalker-removal)
+Memory Jar (It has to be tested, should be worth it)
+Lead the Stampede (really nice card advantage, draws non-elf-creatures too, very good experiences)
+Green Sun’s Zenith (you can cast any creature in the deck, it just costs G more…

I think the badest matchups are RW/R, non-G-decks (no forestwalk…) with fast huge creatures and decks plying with Oath. Oath is hard to handle, there are just four possibilities to remove it in my deck.

So long, maybe I will test it in tournament again soon.

  35. Pennywise Pennywise says:

My latest developments compared to the original list:

    - Ambush Commander
    - Gempalm Strider
    - Masked Admirers

All in all it changed more to landdestruction and some mana denial.
Also there is some more removal to get rid of problematic creatures (e.g. grim Lavamancer)or lands (e.g. Tabernacle).

I think in the current meta it is hard for elves to stay competitive but I will always try to keep them on top…

Wowww, some changes I didn’t think of. I wouldn’t ever cut the Poacher, he is way too strong to cut! The following ones should really stay in the deck too I think: Masked Admirers: The deck needs this card advantage I think, 3/2 body is nice too.
Wood Elves: Hard to say if he is as good as the Harbinger, but I was always happy to draw him early in the game. Even after wrath-effects, you still have at least 3~4 Mana to recover.
Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers: 3/4 body, thats huge for Elves. Very good against fast decks with little creatures. 4 toughness means hard to burn down.
Lightning Greaves: This is absolutly necessary to accelerate own play and to protect important creatures, like Priest of Titania, Elvish Archdruid, Skyshroud Poacher (!!!), Wirewood Symbiote and so on
Sylvan Scrying: This is such a good card, too. There are so powerful Lands in the Deck. It would fit into the mana denial-theme, too, since you play both, Wasteland and Tectonic Edge.

And the Poacher… wow, he won sooo many games for me. If the opponent couldn’t handle him at once, he won the game for me in most cases. Starting with the first round he is active, he often searched too times per round. 1st: Quirion Ranger, untap Poacher (ok, not possible in opponents turn with Lighning Greaves equipped), 2nd: Imaculate Magistrate. Next turn attack, after Block search Joraga Warcaller, put +1/+1 counters on Warcaller (1 or 2 times).
    This is sooo brutal.
